Tesla Ruling The Automotive Industry.
What comes to your mind when you listen Electric cars? Tesla ? What if someone asks you which is the first electric car? Chances of you saying Tesla is 99.9% . Because most of us don’t know about the history of electric cars. Let’s start from the begining.
The Origin
Electric Vehicles first appeared in the early 19th Century. It was invented by Ànyos Jedlik who first created an electric motor and and then created a small model car powered by his electric motor. At the same time, a Scottish Inventer Robert Anderson also created a crude electric carriage.
English Inventor Thomas Parker who was responsible for innovations such as electrifying the London underground, Overhead Tramways built the first production Elecric vehicle in 1884. His interest in construction of fuel-efficient vehicles led him to experiment with electric vehicles. Electric vehicles got a lot of love in its early ages. A lot of people showed their interest in buying one. But the high cost, low top speed and short battery life led to decline in their use.
Modern Electric Cars
California Electric Car maker Tesla Motors began development in 2004. They were under process of making the Tesla Roadster which was then delivered to customers in 2008. The Roadster was the first ever Highway Legal all Electric car running on Lithium-ion battery and also became the first ever all-electric car to travel more than 320km or 200 miles in a single charge.
Tesla went ahead and sold another 2500 units of Tesla Roadster in over 30 countries till December 2012 as its contract with Lotus Motors expired.
Mitsubishi Motors following Tesla launched their i-MIEV in Japan for limited customers only in 2009. The Nissan Leaf introduced in 2010 became the first ever all-electric, zero-tailpipe emission family hatchback to be produced from a major manufacturer. Following them The Renault launched their first ever electric cars. It looked like every car company was making an electric car since the launch of Tesla.
Tesla Ruling The Car Market.
Tesla launched its new electric car which was the Tesla Model S in the mid 2012 and it began its deliveries in 2013. Tesla Model S ranked the top selling Car in North America with over 4900 units sold in just the first quarter of 2013 which is ahead of the Nissan Leaf. The Model S alone ranked the 5.1% shares of all the new cars sold in 2013 becoming the first ever electric car to rank the new car sales ranking in any country. If you go to North America, you may spot more Tesla’s than a motor car. As i saw in a YouTube video, any direction you turn, you are only going to see The Tesla’s.
Tesla then unveiled the launch of their new Tesla Model 3 in March, 2016. With pricing starting at $35,000 and a range of 345 km or 215 miles in a single charge, everyone had their mouths open. After the Launch Event of the Model 3, there were over 115,000 people lined outside the Tesla dealership to make an reservation on their Tesla.
One week after the event, Tesla motors reported over 325,000 reservations on the Model 3 which was more than triple of units sold of Tesla Model S. The reservations alone presented the potential sales over $14 Billion. With the Tesla charging Stations All-Around the world with free charging and auto-pilot in all cars which helps car drive on its own and the lighter weight body with no engine helps the car to go from 0–60 in less than 2.5 seconds, Tesla gets a great customer feedback. And the sensors the cars is equiped with helps to prevent accidents.
And with The New version of the Tesla Roadster, the world went crazy. With a price tag of $200,000 and range of 1000 km with 0–60 in less than 1.9 seconds, the Tesla Roadster will be the fastest electric car in the world with putting the supercar companies like Lamborghini, Ferrari and Mclaren in a big question tag . This has forced most of the automotive companies towards making an electric car. And some have already made some whereas some are under the production. Popular automotive companies like Hyundai and others have put a stepping stone towards the electric cars market.
Future of electric cars.
After looking at the success of Tesla motors and how electric cars are rulling the world, companies like BMW and Mercedes have also showed some interest in producing electric cars with BMW launching its i3 and Mercedes launching its EQC back in 2018 which failed to satisfy the customer needs. In a recent post by the Six Time World Champion and Mercedes Formula 1 driver, Lewis Hamilton said that he is working with Mercedes to make a better electric car which is the Mercedes EQS which is going to be launched in 2022.
However this wasn’t a surprising news as Both Mercedes and BMW have already launched some electric vehicles. The news i was shocked to hear and probably you would be shocked too is that Ford is taking a move towards the electric cars with a new version of their Mustang. Ford announced this news itself that they will be coming out with a new version of their most popular car which is the Mustang. They also confirmed that it will be all-electric as well as it is going to be a Hatchback. Yes, you heard it right. A Hatchback. The most popular two-seater car from back in 1990s is now going to be a hatchback. But hey, who knows it might turn into a big achievement as we can see Ford has been struggling with its cars due to which they are coming with new versions of the old cars.
Looking at these I can say that the future of electric cars is way better than it was few years ago. And I’m sure you agree with me. However I’m pretty sure Tesla would still lead the Electric car industry. And what do you think about the Electric cars?
